An Introduction to Electron Beam Irradiation

Electron Beam is a kind of irradiation technology that based on electricity. An accelerator contains electron source, beam tube and scanner horn that produce beam current to the under beam transfer system. The classical average density of medical products are 0.15g/〖cm〗^3. Using the 10MeVa energy, the beam will travel and go through 20-25 cm of the product, it can go through up to 60 cm if we do the irradiation twice on the both side of the product. In comparison to the γ-ray device, all of the beam current’s power are concentrated on the top and surface of the product with a short travel distance. Thus, the dose that Electron Beam produce is much higher than the γ-ray device, which will shorten the irradiation time greatly.
Electron Beam, X-ray and γ-ray are using the same irradiation technology, basically they are sharing:
Same dose unit : gray Gy;
Same irradiation sterilization controlling standards: ISO11137;
Same irradiation principle: destroy the DNA structure of bacteria;
It is recognized by FDA and most of countries.
The principle of Electron Beam irradiation:
The energy emitted by the electron source will ionize the product or inspire high-energy electrons that destroy the DNA structure of cells. It eliminates the regeneration ability of bacteria or lead to a death directly.
